Continuously Delight Yourself in His Word – My Daily Bread!

Our call to hear the voice of the Lord is taken from James 1:25, NIV, which reads:

”But the man who looks intently into the perfect law that gives freedom, and continues to do this, not forgetting what he has heard, but dong it – he will be blessed in what he does.” 

For Christians references in the Old and New Testament to the “law” refer today to the entire complete, infallible, revealed Word of God, which is contained in the Holy Bible.   Enough has been written about obedience and following God’s commandments since the beginning of time.   Every since Moses received the tablets of stone written by the very finger of God, man has not quite figured out how to comply.  But here in this passage, God is telling us what actions to take to please Him and be blessed.

First, we must look into God’s Word continuously; let it be our delight!   –  “But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on His law he meditates day and night.  He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yield its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither.  Whatever he does prospers.”  (Psalm 1: 2-3, NIV)  Secondly, we must never forget what is in the Word; for our obedience is tied to knowing, we cannot obey it if we do not know!  –  “I desire to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart.”  (Psalm 40: 8, NIV)   And finally we must put it into practice in our lives.  “Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves.  Do what it says.”  (James 1:22, NIV)

Now this is nothing new, but the question is why it is so hard?   We could all probably add a few reasons that have seemed plausible to us along our own journey with God; mere attempts to explain our lackadaisical commitment.   But somehow they all come up short when we peer at them through God’s eyes and the standards that He gives in His Word.

It is of no little consequence that the law is referred to as perfect.  It is the absolute source of God’s authority on how to live.  Perfect also means it’s complete, or lacking no good instructions for the man/women of God.  Are we not told:  “All scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped for every good work.”  (2 Timothy 3: 16, NIV)

This passage also speaks of the law as giving freedom.  Because of Christ death on Calvary we are freed from the bondage of sin and its inevitable separation from God.  We are free to attain to the righteousness of God in sweet fellowship!  “But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves to God, the benefits you reap leads to holiness and the result is eternal life.”  (Romans 6: 22, NIV)

Saints we have all we need to be blessed of God in our daily lives!  His revealed Word is our standard; it is complete and sustains us through the Holy Breath of the Living God!  So grab your Word and peer into it with delight without measure!  Be able to say:  ”I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on your laws.  I hold fast to your statues, O Lord; do not let me be put to shame.  I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free.”  (Psalm 119: 30-32, NIV)
