Christ the Living Stone!

Christ the Living Stone  – My Daily Bread!

The voice of the Lord calls to us today from 1 Peter 2: 4-5, NIV, which reads:

“As you come to Him, the living Stone – rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to Him – you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ”.

Here Christ is referred to as the ‘Living Stone’ and His followers ‘like living stones’.  I readily recalled Jesus being referred to as the Cornerstone, because of His pivotal role as the foundation of the Church; but I did not quite remember this analogy, however, it captivated my thoughts.  This reference to Christ as the Living Stone speaks to His over arching importance in God’s plan for salvation for mankind.  It reminds me of His role as the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world, who through His death reconciles us to God, bearing ultimate witness to God’s grace.  Through His resurrection we are able to rejoice in the hope of eternal life!  Because of Christ we can live – He is truly our living Stone!

However, although the cornerstone is critical since all other stones will be set in reference to this stone, thus determining the position of the entire structure, others stones are needed to complete a building.  This is no different for God’s Kingdom, Saints we are the other living stones in the Church of God!   Living stones that are being built into a spiritual house, the purpose of which is to – offer acceptable worship before the Lord!  Peter further expands on our duties in verses 9-10 of 1 Peter 2, NIV,  when he says:   “But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His wonderful light.  Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God, once you had not received mercy, but now have received mercy”.

As living stones Peter beautifully describes what we are called to do – worship God and to herald the message of salvation through Christ, to ‘declare the praises of Him who called us out of darkness into His wonderful light’!

Jesus made an interesting statement about the power of God over inanimate stones when He was on the road to Jerusalem.  In response to the Pharisees telling Jesus to rebuke His disciples for acknowledging Him as the “King who comes in the name of the Lord… He replied, if they kept quiet, the stones will cry out”.  (Luke 19: 37-40, NIV)  The truth in this simple statement is that God’s message will go forth and His will be done whether or not we do our part.

God’s redemptive plan does not depend on us, however; He has graciously invited those who believe to share in His plan and indeed be precious to Him.  So here is what we all need to ask ourselves:  Am I a living stone; part of the house of the Living One, the people belonging to God called to testify in His name?  Are others lives impacted by my witness for Christ?  Does my life sing of His praises and sacrifices acceptable to God?   I pray that all who are in the house of the Lord, sing forth His praise – the witness of salvation!
