Wisdom Encased in a Humble Heart!

Wisdom Encased in a Humble Heart – My Daily Bread!

Often in the Word pride is contrasted with humbleness as much as wisdom is spoken of in contrast to foolishness.  What is it about pride that makes this quality unattractive to God and so harmful to us?  Is there a correlation between pride and having wisdom?  Incite is found in our reflection today out of Psalm 36:1-4 which speaks to the heart of an evil man (or women): “There is no fear of God before his eyes.  For he flatters himself in his own eyes.   He has ceased to be wise and to do good.”

What an apt description of human pride! Human pride is dangerous because it prevents one from having the proper fear – or said another way, respect and awe of the Creator.  It stops us from recognizing our need for God or his legitimate claim to authority over our lives; can lead to not producing ‘good’ for God and ultimately not even knowing him.  It is no wonder we are told “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Pr 9:10-11) and “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” (1Pet 5:5)

On the other hand did you know that the Word of God links wisdom with humility?  This may seem counter intuitive by the standards of this current age; most of the people the world considers smart are not humble.   James 3:13 reads “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom”.  Since God it after our hearts, possessing a humble heart would be wise.  James further expounds on wisdom and humility when he says “But, the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy.”  (Jas 3:17)

We need to keep our pride in check; our God has no use for it.  However, there is nothing wrong with having a healthy view of who we are in Christ; namely lowly bond servants, brought and paid for by the blood of our Savior who emptied himself for us on Calvary that we might attain to the manifold grace of God.
