God’s Call!

God’s Call  – My Daily Bread!

Have you ever felt inadequate to do something that the Lord has called you to do?  Did you quickly think, not me, this one or that one is more qualified than I!  This must be a mistake.   Our call to hear the voice of God is taken from Exodus 4: 11-12, NIV.  Here God is speaking to Moses from the burning bush after Moses is making similar objections to accepting God’s charge to rescue the nation of Israel out of bondage.

“The Lord said to him, ‘Who gave man his mouth?  Who makes him deaf or mute?  Who gives him sight or makes him blind?  Is it not I, the Lord?  Now go; I will help you speak and teach you what to say.”

Can you believe it, yes Big Moe, one of the greatest prophets of the Hebrew nation felt unfit for what God called him to do!  Even after God spoke to him out of a burning bush!  Here Moses was told that God would teach and instruct Him on what to do.  That God would be with him to help him accomplish what His plans were.  Do you know that this is the same promises that God gives His Saints today?

Through Moses’ story we will review some fascinating truths about how our great God operates in our lives especially when He puts us on assignment!  As you read this I challenge you to think of the burning bush as a modern-day ‘tipping point’, or invitation from God to get serious about His business!

God did something to draw Moses to Him, He Chose Moses!   Moses encountered God in the desert when he first saw something extraordinary, “Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up.  So Moses thought, ‘I will go over and see this strange sight – why the bush does not burn up.” (Exodus 4:2, NIV)  Our hearts are often drawn to God after we have had a sentinel event in our life; so when something extraordinary happens, listen carefully, God may be calling!

God Knew who He was calling, He called Moses by name!   As Moses approached “God called to him from within the bush, Moses, Moses. “  (Exodus 4:4, NIV)  God knew who Moses was; where he was and his current circumstances; Moses did not have to identify himself.  So don’t be mistaken, if God is calling you, it’s you He is looking for!

God established the ground rules for entering into His presence!   Then “God said take off your sandals, for the place you are standing is holy ground.” (Exodus 4:5-6, NIV)  God began to teach Moses how to revere and honor Him as the Most High God; that there is a right way to approach God, – with respect for His Holiness, with godly fear and submission.  God began to shift Moses’ paradigm – to teach him that the things that were important to survive in his old life may not be important in the future world God had planned for him.

Moses sandals were very important to him; remember he walked miles each day tending sheep in the desert.  He could not do his secular job without them.  However God told him to take them off, so Moses stood in his bare feet before the Lord.  Now the Word does not record how long Moses talked to God, but one thing we can conclude is this – his feet were probably getting hot!   God was letting Moses know that communion with Him, was not about what was comfortable for Moses; that when we are ushered into the presence of God, or when we are given an assignment by God – we need to let our worldly cares fade to the background and focus on God and the task at hand!   The things that made us successful in the past may not have the same significance in God’s Kingdom; and may need to be shed altogether for God to get your proper attention – for you to be useful to the Lord.

God made know His identity!   He told Moses “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob” “I AM WHO I AM, this is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I AM has sent me to you’”.  (Exodus 3: 6, 14, NIV)  God made it clear to Moses who He was.  He established the preeminence of His ‘Godship’ by speaking to Moses of His past covenantal relationship with his forefathers; and of His present and future.   What comfort for us today to know that The Great I AM always has been, always is and always will be God!

Praise be to God that in these last days He has revealed Himself to us through His Son!  Speaking of Christ the Word tells us:  “He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last days for your sake.  Through Him you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him, and so your faith and hope are in God.”  (1 Peter 1:20-21, NIV)

God provided the resources that Moses needed to be successful in his commission!

GOD IN ACTION: By now the Lord had had enough of Moses’ reluctance for the Word tells us Moses still resisted and told the Lord “I have never been eloquent, neither in the past nor since you have spoken to your servant.  I am slow of speech and tongue.  Please send someone else to do it.”  (Exodus 4: 10, 13, NIV)  Now “the Lord’s anger burned against Moses” (Exodus 4:14, NIV) and rightly so.  What God does next is indeed extraordinary – God extends Moses grace by giving him what he needed to enabled him to accomplish God’s work.

First He told Moses that He would give him his brother Aaron to be Moses’ mouthpiece to the Nation of Israel and promised to teach Aaron what to say and do also; and secondly God gave Moses the power to perform “miraculous signs” (Exodus 4:17, 21) through the use of his ordinary staff (a tool he used to shepherd the sheep).  As in the case of Moses, not only will God give us His power and all that we need to do what he has asked us to do; but God will also send others if He sees fit to help and will equip  them with what they need to be successful as well!

We all know the rest of the story found in the Book of Exodus:  Moses took up his charge, used the staff God gave Him, and did extraordinary thing in God’s name to lead the Nation of Israel out of slavery and became one of the greatest prophets for God!    What about you?  Are you holding back on something God has called you to do?   Is there a burning bush calling your name?   Have you accepted God’s invitation?   Have courage Saints to take off your sandals (or anything that prevents you from concentrating on the Lord’s will for you);  for the Exalted One seeks to use you in an awesome way –  to help, teach and guide you by His power to do HIS will!
