The Certainty of God’s Promises – My Daily Bread!
Today the call of the Lord is found in Genesis 46: 1-4, NIV, which reads:
“So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac. And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, ‘Jacob! Jacob! Here I am’, he replied. ‘I am God, the God of your father, he said. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.’”
These words of scripture were the reassurance that God personally gave to Jacob when he discovered that his son Joseph was alive down in Egypt. Jacob had accepted his son’s invitation to come to Egypt to escape the famine in the land of Canaan. No doubt he wondered if he was still within the will of the Lord by going down to Egypt, after all he was already in the promised land of Canaan even though the promise of Israel taking possession of the land had not been fulfilled.
So what did Jacob do? He turned to the Lord and He worshiped! He stopped along the way and offered sacrifices to the God of his fore fathers in the place where his patriarch Abraham and father Isaac had frequently worshiped and called upon the name of the Lord. And God answered Him!
God called Jacob by name and reaffirmed His commitment to bring his descendants back to the land of the promise. He also told Jacob that He would go with him to the Land of Egypt and assured him that he would not only see his son Joseph again, but that he would die peacefully in the presence of his son. All this when Jacobs hope of ever seeing Joseph had been dead for years. God rewarded Jacobs faithfulness and exceeded his expectations by not only preserving his son alive; but also prospering him and making him the means of God’s salvation for his entire family!
Like Jacob we also have reason to believe the prophets words in Isaiah 58: 11, NIV, which says: “The Lord will guide you always; He will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail”. What a reminder of God’s personal care for His saints! Yes, even when doubt creeps around the edges of our lives and we began to question if we are in the will of the Lord, He is still with us. At those times Saints, take a page from Jacob’s story and seek the face of the Lord in worship and prayer. And like Jacob don’t forget to bring all that you have, hold nothing back from God for He has promised to “be with you wherever you go.” (Joshua 1: 9, NIV) And be assured that “He cares for those who trust in Him.” (Nahum 1: 7, NIV)
