The Most Excellent Blessing of Peace!

The Most Excellent Blessing of Peace – My Daily Bread!

Our call to obedience before Christ is taken from Colossians 3: 15, NIV, which reads:

“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace”.

Sisters and Brothers God knew in His infinite wisdom that we would at times be in conflict with one another, yes even as Christians who are called to Love.   In our fallen flesh we still exhibit elements of “the old creature” which can never honor God.  So this passage was given to encourage us to press toward God and His solutions when these opportunities present themselves.

We must resist the tendency to let ourselves reign over these situations.  Pursuing peace is a conscious decision we must make.   Note the passage is expressly talking about the “peace of Christ”, not our own peace.  Our own peace may not emulate the high standards inherent in the peace of Christ.   And since we are all separate individuals our results would vary and invariably not lead to the glory of God.

And here Saints is a noteworthy saying regarding God’s reigning  peace – how much peace we have with our fellow Christians is in direct proportion to the love we demonstrate toward others.    So if you are a brother or sister who always seems to be in conflict with your brothers and sisters’ in Christ, you may want to check your love – yes, we are talking about your very love for God!  We are told in 1 John 4: 20 “If anyone says, I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar.  For anyone who does not love his brother, whom he has seen, cannot love God, whom he has not seen.”

The apostle Paul  gives us God’s excellent recipe for His  peace when he says:  “Therefore as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, cloth yourself with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.  Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another.  Forgive as the Lord forgave you.  And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.”  (Colossians 3: 14, NIV)

The blessing of God’s reigning peace in our lives is the comfort we have in Christ for being his chosen people.  However loving in the power of God’s Holy Spirit is what allows us to attain it.  And loving becomes the active practice of the virtues mentioned – compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, patience, forgiveness.  Saints let us exhort one another to strive toward these things as we pursue God’s reigning peace; His most excellent  blessing that binds us together in Christ Jesus!
