Be Anxious For Nothing – My Daily Bread!
Our call to thanksgiving before God is taken from Philippians 4: 6-7, NIV, which reads:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your heart and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
Is it possible to not be anxious about anything? That seems like a tall order especially today when we tend to be anxious about our home life, family, our jobs and our neighborhoods, so many things to make our minds uneasy. However, here Paul gives us the remedy – take it all to God in prayer with thanksgiving! Yes we can lead worry free lives if we understand that God is in control – that “He will watch over your life; the LORD WILL WATCH OVER YOUR COMING AND GOING BOTH NOW AND FOREVERMORE.” (Psalm 121: 7-8, NIV)
The next verse speaks of the peace of God that we get from truly understanding that He controls our very lives; it is a peace that others cannot begin to fathom; and sometimes we cannot understand it either! But it guards our hearts and minds, the two most vulnerable aspects of our beings from Satan when we are at our most painful moments.
But there is a reason that Paul encourages us to present our petitions with thanksgiving. Being thankful signifies that we are appreciative of what our God will do to our benefit before it occurs! Scripture tells us that He is “able to do exceedingly abundantly above all we ask or think, according to the power that works in us“. (Ephesians 3:20, NIV) So thanksgiving with our petitions acknowledges God’s preeminence in our lives, our trust and reliance on Him to do what He knows is best for us. If we truly believe this in our hearts, we can be thankful when we come before the Father in prayer; for He is our comfort, He is our joy!
