The Value of a Child’s Heart – My Daily Bread!
Our call to hear the voice of God is taken from Luke 18: 15-17, NIV, which reads:
“People were also bringing babies to Jesus to have Him touch them. When the disciples saw this, they rebuked them. But Jesus called the children to Him and said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as theses. I tell you the truth; anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it”.
Christ was a master teacher. He capitalized on every opportunity to teach His disciples what was necessary to be true followers of His.
On this occasion they purported to know the mind of Jesus when in fact their thoughts were far from what Jesus was thinking. (Thank the Lord we never do that!) Here the disciples assumed that Jesus would not wish to waste time with children that could not possibly appreciate what Jesus was talking about. Let’s remember that Jesus had already rebuked them on several occasions because they could not grasp the meaning of what He was saying. So we can at least give them the benefit of the doubt and say we might have gone there as well.
But Jesus used this instance to reveal to them what qualities were necessary in order to enter into the Kingdom of God. What do you think about when you think of a child’s heart? Some qualities that come to mind include open acceptance, complete trust, faith, obedience, carefree and unconditional heartfelt love just to name a few. For Christ’s followers then and now this could translate to the following:
Open acceptance of God’s plan for our life and His Word!
Complete trust that God will do what he says he will do!
Faith to believe that Jesus is the Son of God; the Risen Savior who sits at the right hand of God!
An obedient heart to following Him!
A carefree spirit not weighted down with the things of this world, but a spirit made light by the yoke of Christ!
An unconditional love from the heart for God that makes Him the focal point in our life, the apple of our eye!
It’s interesting to note that Scripture does not record anyone asking Jesus what He meant. They understood that while using this simple analogy speaking about children, the least important things in their minds; Jesus revealed to them the most important thing they needed to know – the state of their hearts and the level of their readiness for the things relevant to the Kingdom of God. I cannot help but think that Jesus may have lost some followers on that day.
Saints, God is seeking to have the same dialogue with us today. Will He find the child in you He desires? Are you ready to embrace the relevant things of His Kingdom? Has your heart been made free from old ways of thinking that do not speak of obedience, trusting in God, and Christ’s Yoke?
So here in a nutshell we have it, a treasure to keep us ever pure, a secret many cannot see: rejoice in your childish heart and delight yourself in the Lord for yours is the promise of the Kingdom of Heaven!
