Trust in the Lord – My Daily Bread!
Our words of praise are taken from Proverbs 3: 5-7 which reads”
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and depart from evil.”
This advice is precious in the eyes of Saints today because it brings into focus two truths in the life of the Christian: (1) there is joy in knowing that we do not have to worry about anything for we have a God who is interested in guiding and directing us in all our circumstances and (2) that it is not wise to rely on our own opinions and points of view to the exclusion of the Lord’s.
Being wise in our own eyes can cloud our view of God altogether. There is nothing wrong with being wise or smart; that is not what is being cautioned against here. Wise in one’s own eyes, and leaning on one’s own understanding refers to placing such high esteem on one’s own abilities that there is no room for hearing or accepting (acknowledging) God’s perspective, instruction or counsel. When we rely on ourselves; we put ourselves in the center of our lives and God is relegated to the fringes.
The latter part of this scripture, “fear the Lord and depart from evil” draws a correlation between having the proper fear of the Lord and the ability to resist temptation to sin! It is important to recognize that although we are saved unto Christ we still occupy our fleshly bodies and have to contend with our sinful nature inherited from Adam. Paul expressed his and our struggle when he said “I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God – through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:21-25)
Yes Saints, it is only through God and His provisions that we are able to be saved! So why would we not seek his perspective on all things in our lives? Only by trusting and leaning on Him are we able to experience the fullness of His glory. We are limited; God is infinite; so acknowledge Him in all things; yield to His direction and guidance and don’t worry, be happy for this is a most precious blessing of the Lord!
