A Raven’s Task – My Daily Bread!
The blessing of God’s comfort is taken from Philippians 4:19 which reads: “And my God will meet all your needs according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus.” What an awesome reassurance to know that our God cares enough about us to meet all our needs out of His riches that are stored up for us in Christ! Not some but all!
To encourage our hearts about the Lord’s concerns for our needs, there is a special story in the Word which tells how God provided food for His prophet Elijah in an unusual way. His story is told in 1 Kings Chapter 17. Here we find God’s Prophet who had just spoken some harsh words of judgment to wicked King Ahab, the King of the Southern Kingdom of Judah. Once again the Nation of Judah had turned from the Lord, to the worship of idols.
Elijah had reason to be concerned about the King’s response for regarding Ahab, we are told: “Ahab son of Omri did more evil in the eyes of the Lord than any of those before him. But he also married Jezebel daughter of Ethabaal king of the Sidonians, and began to serve Baal and worship him. He set up an altar for Baal in the temple of Baal that he built in Samaria.” (1 Kings 16:30-32)
Those who believed in Baal believed he was the god who brought the rains and harvest. So we can appreciate Elijah’s predicament when the Lord told him to tell King Ahab “there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.” (1 Kings17:1) When Elijah bravely confronted the evil king with the word of the living God, all waited to see what would happen to Elijah. In this bold statement he testified to God’s control over heaven and earth, His sovereignty over the dominion of man, and yes over the powerful king.
GOD IN ACTION: What happens next is the beautiful story of Gods loving provisions for those who fear His name and are obedient to His voice! “Then the word of the Lord came to Elijah: ‘Leave here, turn eastward and hide in the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the brook, and I have ordered the ravens to feed you there. So he did what the Lord told him. The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.” (1 Kings 17: 2-6) God removed Elijah out of the situation, told him where to go and how He would provide for him in a place where obviously there was no ready source of food or drink.
Elijah had faith in God’s word and it prompted him to act in accordance with God’s will for him. God demonstrate his faithfulness to Elijah by meeting all of his needs! In a nation that was required to provide for its prophets, it probably appeared ironic to Elijah that God would use the raven, an unclean bird to care for him.
And here is our comfort in Christ: In these troublesome times when many people are unemployed, are fearful of losing their homes and finding it hard to make ends meet, God’s help may come in a way we least expect it. He can make provisions for us that go beyond our comprehension or current level of understanding. God’s power to work on our behalf is vast and limitless. So no matter what the situation, always look for what God is doing and be prepared for something extraordinary for Christ’s riches are glorious and we ”cannot understand the work of God, the maker of all things.” (Ecclesiastes 10: 5)
